Our fields of activity

Special-purpose machines, robotics, machine vision, automation, maintenance and compliance upgrades: all our expertise under one roof.

Design and construction of special-purpose machines

Special-purpose machine being assembled in the workshop

Starting from your project, we support you through every stage:

  1. Drawing up the specification
  2. Preliminary studyprototype to validate the process
  3. Final design
  4. Virtual reality reviewthe machine is viewed and approved before it is built
  5. Construction
  6. Testing and fine-tuning
  7. Delivery and commissioning
  8. Staff training

Unwinding & rewinding

Wide-web slitting station with adjustable knives Dual rewinder of an inspection slitter-rewinder

This is one of our specialities: machines that unwind, convert and rewind web materials (paper, textiles, flexible materials). On these lines, product quality depends on two things: web tension and web alignment.

What we master

  • Web tension control: constant tension from the start to the end of the reel, during acceleration as well as stopping
  • Web guiding and realignment: the web is re-centred automatically and continuously
  • Unwinders, single or dual rewinders and traverse winders designed for your web width and reel diameters
  • Wide-web slitting stations with adjustable knives to change strip width
  • Axis synchronisation using brushless servomotors

Examples

  • Wide-web inspection slitter-rewinder: 2,000 mm web width, camera inspection, two slitting stations and dual rewinder
  • Continuous printing and cutting line
  • Cutting and crimping of baking paper, 17 km reel
  • Multi-strip ribbon traverse winder, sewing benches for web widths up to 450 cm

CAD design

3D design of a line in TopSolid

Our design office designs your machine in 3D in TopSolid, from the preliminary design to the manufacturing drawings.

  • Preliminary design and 3D animation to validate the principle
  • Detailed design and drawings
  • Virtual reality review and ergonomic study before manufacturing

Electrical design

Wired terminal block in an electrical cabinet Panel of plug-in industrial connectors on a cabinet

Our design office defines the architecture, draws the diagrams and selects the components. The cabinets are then wired in our workshops.

Our machines are designed as modules: clean, labelled, plug-in wiring that simplifies transport, installation at your site and, later on, maintenance.

  • Detailed electrical design and diagrams
  • Electrical cabinets built in-house
  • Wiring, labelling and testing before start-up
  • Quick connection using plug-in industrial connectors: each machine module is connected and disconnected in a few minutes, with no possible wiring error

Industrial robot integration

Robotic cell integrated by BERTHOLON

We offer turnkey robotics solutions.

Our solutions include

  • Programming
  • Layout of the robotic equipment
  • Gripper design (pneumatic gripper, vacuum cup…)
  • Vision systems and sensor installation (presence detection, force sensor…)

Robot integration enables you

  • To be more competitive, through higher productivity
  • To improve quality: reliable and repeatable movements
  • To simplify or eliminate strenuous tasks for your staff

Machine vision

Inspection cameras installed above a rewinding line Machine vision cameras integrated into our machines

We integrate machine vision systems into our automation solutions to carry out fast, precise and reliable visual inspections.

With stable inspection quality on your production line, they help optimise your entire production and inspection process, and reach your productivity and quality targets.

Application examples

  • Conformity checks (dimensions, presence…)
  • Part sorting
  • Marking or colour recognition
  • Locating moving products for a tracking robot
  • Continuous inspection of a moving web, on our unwinding and rewinding lines

Automation

Siemens Sinamics drives for brushless axes

Our design office handles the design, development and commissioning of the PLCs and automated systems of your machines.

  • Functional analysis and PLC programming
  • Touchscreen operator interfaces
  • Fine-tuning in the workshop, then commissioning on site

Axis control & motion

Motor-driven axis of a print head

We integrate and program the most suitable technologies for each motion control and positioning requirement.

  • Brushless servomotors
  • Stepper motors
  • Drives and axis synchronisation

Virtual reality & ergonomic study

Virtual reality headset

Before manufacturing starts, you step inside your future machine at full scale, wearing a virtual reality headset. Your operators and maintenance technicians can take part.

What you check

  • Workstation ergonomics: working heights, movements, distances
  • Access to adjustment, cleaning and maintenance areas
  • The layout of the machine in your workshop

What you gain

  • Changes are made on the model, not on the steel
  • A machine accepted by its users from day one

Industrial IT & traceability

Supervision screen of a BERTHOLON machine

In medical as in other regulated sectors, a machine must prove what it has done: who started which batch, with which settings, and what was changed. We deliver the machine with its software and the documentation needed to qualify it.

On the machine

  • Audit trail: every action and every change is recorded and time-stamped
  • Recipe management and data logging in an SQL database
  • User accounts linked to your company directory (Active Directory / LDAP)
  • Connection to your ERP: production orders in, batch reports back

In the documentation

  • Hardware (HDS) and software (SDS) design specifications
  • Test plans and test sheets for factory (FAT) and site (SAT) acceptance
  • Documentary input for your IQ / OQ / PQ qualification protocols
  • On-site assistance during qualifications

Industrial maintenance

Our teams work on your equipment, at your site or in our workshops.

  • On site: electrical, automation and mechanical troubleshooting. We look for the cause of the failure (wear, settings, environment) before returning the machine to service, to prevent it from happening again
  • In our workshops: reconditioning, retrofit and mechanical improvements, to adapt the machine to its real operating conditions
  • Remotely: diagnosis and assistance via VPN or 4G link, without waiting for a site visit

Modification & compliance upgrades

Refurbished machine brought into compliance

Rebuilding and refurbishment of existing machines, to extend their service life and bring them up to the required safety level.

  • Risk assessment
  • Definition of the safety levels to be implemented
  • Work in collaboration with approved bodies (APAVE, VERITAS, SOCOTEC…)

Transfer, installation & trading

Transfer of an industrial machine

In addition to our design and manufacturing work, we provide:

  • Machine transfer
  • Machine modification and reconditioning
  • Trading of industrial supplies
